No April Fools–It’s Gut Check Time For Sabres

You have to give it to the Sabres.  They gave their fans something to believe in by battling back and making hockey in April a distinct possibility.  But after tonight’s loss to the Leafs, it’s hard for anyone to think that this team will make the postseason–and if they do, it’s hard to see them doing well.

If you want to blame tonight’s loss on the absence of Christian Ehrhoff and Tyler Myers, you can–but remember, it’s a team effort.  This entire team needed to come out with a win against an opponent they absolutely had to beat, and came up short.  Sloppy passes, failure to win battles to the puck–that’s what I point to.

And, with the Caps winning tonight in a shootout (of course), here’s the scenario:

The Sabres need to win out.

They have absolutely zero room for error in these next three games–and the final two are against two of the top teams in the conference.  Toronto comes to Buffalo on Tuesday for the final home game of the season.  Then it’s on to Philly on Thursday and the season finale against Boston on Saturday.  Washington, meanwhile, visits the Lightning on Monday, then host Florida on Thursday before taking on the Rangers at the Garden on Saturday.

Simply put, the Sabres need all three.  They might be able to get in by going 2-1.  Either way, two wins by Washington regardless of what Buffalo does puts a wrap on it.

Personally, I don’t see the Sabres winning out.  But this team has a chance to prove me wrong.  After tonight, I’m not so sure they will.
